The World Outside Your Window Will Be Artificial

Don’t like the view, simply wave your hand and select something more pleasing, chose the time of day, or even adjust the color tone to help alleviate your jet lag. In a densely populated city like Hong Kong, where most people have a view of only the building next door, replacing windows with Philips ‘Daylight’ videowalls could give everyone the best view in town. ‘Daylight’, they’re calling it. The Dutch masters say it’s the hotel room of the future: wave your arm in front of the window and change the ambience the room. Block out noise, change the lighting and even add foliage. It’ll even open virtual blinds when you walk into the room.

With displays getting thinner, cheaper and brighter, it won’t be long before glass windows start to look old fashioned.

Expose Yourself
However, windows still have a function that walls don’t — outsiders can see in. According to the New York Times, the new trend is all about giving a performance for all the peeping-toms in your neighbourhood:

Not only will the building’s glass walls allow W residents to see, and be seen by, passers-by on the street below, but Mr. Fletcher and Ms. Lillo have created peekaboo features within each apartment, like a window between the kitchen and the bedroom, and a bathroom that’s a glass cube, allowing residents to expose themselves to their roommates and family members, too. The idea, Mr. Fletcher said, was to frame and exhibit the intimate details of life, or at least ones that would be aesthetically pleasing, “like your silhouette in the shower.”

The has a breathtaking view.
