Holograms Will Replace Air Travel

There seems to be a lot of excitement about Prince Charles saving about 15 tons of carbon dioxide by not attending The World Future Energy Summit 2008. In his place, he sent a hologram.

Of course, it wasn’t actually a hologram — not like the, "help me Obi-Wan Kenobi…" transmission you might imagine.

The hologram is based on a 19th century trick, called Pepper’s Ghost. The five-minute video, recorded about a month ago, was be beamed onto a film set to create Charles’ 3-D image. (YouTube news clip)

The Prince is not the first celebrity to use Victorian parlor trick to avoid traveling. Earlier this year David Beckham used the company as the Prince to speak to an audience from London — and Al Gore made a similar virtual journey to speak at Live Earth.

The couldn’t really be bothered to show up in person.
